How to Enable the Hidden Dark Theme in Windows 10

There is a hidden feature in Windows 10 that allows you to make most apps, including the Settings Panel to go Dark!

Below, add these two registry DWORD values using Regedit (Instructions on how to get to and use Regedit are below the screenshots):

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize]
“AppsUseLightTheme”=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize]
“AppsUseLightTheme”=dword:00000000

Additionally, for a quicker way to add them, simply download the Dark Theme Reg file and the Light Theme Reg file (Right-Click and save as) for quick switching back and forth (or if you don’t really care for the Dark Theme after all). No need to log out or reboot, simply close the Apps and reload them. Feel free to inspect the Reg file before double clicking on them to switch between the two (it’s a good safe practice to always inspect registry key settings prior to importing them, no matter where you get them).

Instructions on how to use RegEdit:

  1. Hold down Windows Key on your Keyboard and press R to bring up Run (Or right click on the Start Button and click Run).
  2. Type in Regedit and press Ok.
  3. You will see a tree like view of keys. Expand each of the following: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Themes > Personalize
  4. Inside the “Personalize” Folder right click on the right and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  5. Rename it to AppsUseLightTheme
  6. If it already exists, double click on it and change its value to 0 and press ok (Keep it on Hexadecimal).
  7. To change it back to light, simply change it to 1.
  8. Do the same for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Themes > Personalize
  9. If you don’t have a Personalize Folder in Themes, simply right click on Themes Folder and press New > Key
  10. Rename that Key to Personalize, then do steps 4-7

Secular Sunday Matinee #5 – Carrie

Posted on 29 June 2014 by The Secular Nerd

This weeks Secular Sunday Matinee is Carrie. Who can resist Stephen King’s work, a young John Travolta, the awesome Sissy Spacek, and the overzealously religious acting of Piper Laurie as Carries mother? “They’re all going to laugh at you!” has been parodied by so many films and television shows, but in reality, this movie touched on some really serious issues regarding mental illness and religious fundamentalism/extremism.
From IMDB:

Carrie White is a shy young girl who doesn’t make friends easily. After her class mates taunt her about her horrified reaction to her totally unexpected first period one of them takes pity on her and gets Tommy Ross, her boyfriend and class hunk to invite Carrie to the senior prom. Meanwhile another girl who has been banned from the prom for her continued aggressive behaviour is not as forgiving and plans a trick to embarrass Carrie in front of the whole school. What she doesn’t realise is that Carrie is … gifted, and you really don’t want to get her angry.
